POLYNICES

POLYNICES
POLYNICES
fil. Oedipi, Thebanorum Regis, ex nefando Iocastae matris concubitu, frater Eteoclis, quibus pater, sponte in exilium proficiscens, regnum eâ lege reliquerat, ut alternis annis regnarent. Verum cum Eteocles, cui utpote natu maiori Polynices priores regnandi vices concessit, fratri suo regnô cedere recusaret, ille Argos sese contulit ad Adrastum regem, qui filiam suam nomine Argiam uxorem illi despondit, contractisque quam maximis potuit viribus, una cum Tydeo, altero genero, Thebanis bellum intulit, cuius is fuit exitus, ut duo fratres singulari certamine congressi, mutuis vulneribus caderent. Quinetiam cadaveribus rogo impositis, flamma dicitur se divisisse, tamquam implacabile illud odium, quod inter vivos exstiterat, ne morte quidem potuerit finiri. Statius in Thebaide.
